Carving Encaustic Scratchboards

Sunday, June 11, 2017, 10-4 pm, $200 (SOLD OUT)
Location: Portland, Oregon

Traditional scratchboards are created on white panels covered with a black surface so that when you scratch through the top layer you a left with a white line on a dark background. Imagine adding wax into the mix! In this class we'll use some of those traditional ideas, but I'll expand on that method to help you create scratchboards with vibrant color, incorporating wax and other unusual materials. It's a really exciting way to work!

Even if you've tried scratchboards on your own, this class will likely expand the idea of how to use them in your own work. I have a very mixed media approach to my encaustic work and my mix-n-match methods are something we'll experiment with in class. I'll also share my favorite tools and some great methods for creating these more quickly since they usually require many layers of color. The layers go down much faster if you use of a small torch instead of a heat gun, so if you aren't familiar with how to use one you'll learn that too.

This is an intermediate class for those comfortable working with wax. If you haven't taken a beginning encaustic class please choose one of those first before registering for this advanced technique. Feel free to call me with any questions.

All supplies will be provided and most students leave class with 2 finished projects. Confirmation, directions to my studio and additional information will be emailed to each student upon registration. Space is limited to 6 students so classes fill quickly.
