The Embracing Encaustic Series

Encaustic is the art of painting with beeswax mixed with colored pigments and resin. This mixture is applied hot then fused with heat to bond each layer together. This type of painting has a long history dating back some 3,000 years to the Greeks working in Egypt. It's the oldest form of painting that you've probably never heard of. Until now.

In Embracing Encaustic: Learning to Paint with Beeswax, you'll learn how to paint with this fascinating medium using simple step-by-step instructions on how to paint, fuse and control your wax for many exciting effects. It includes information on tools, materials, safety, photo transfers, incising lines, wax collage, adding texture, and even has detailed instructions for mixing your own encaustic medium and paint.

The first edition of Embracing Encaustic was published in 2007 and after several printings of the second edition sold out, it briefly went out of print. The third edition has been published exclusively as an eBook, with some updated content and all new work in the Inspiration Gallery, which includes 35 talented artists who share their work and reveal their personal painting methods. But Wait, There's More...

The big surprise is that there are two eBooks instead of one, both under the Embracing Encaustic title. This allows a total of 70 artists to be included between the two books while keeping downloads manageable. Embracing Encaustic: Mixing Media builds on the basic techniques illustrated in the first book in the series. Today artists are pushing encaustic painting in new directions by working with all kinds of different media, below, above and within their wax and this book celebrates that.

You'll find step-by-step instructions on working with oil sticks, burning shellac, creating encaustic monotypes, drawing on wax with graphite and artists' crayons, using stencils, and pouring wax. The Inspiration Gallery will introduce you to the work of 36 artists and serve as a springboard for you to find your own unique way of working with this exciting medium. I expect this second eBook to be available within the next couple of weeks.

Why an eBook?

This electronic format enables delivery of a more comprehensive book at half the price which can be downloaded instantly anywhere in the world. My favorite feature of an electronic art book is that you can double tap on each image and enlarge it to view the details, just as you would on your smart phone. Try THAT with a printed book! Embracing Encaustic is available through Amazon.com for Kindle readers, iPads, smart phones and other devices with Kindle software, including Macs and PC's.
